National Aspirations vs Islamist Jihad

The Syrian regime of Ahmad el-Shara, better - or worse - known as Mohammed el-Julani, is now some 20 months in power, navigating foreign affairs while confronting internal challenges. Its attention abroad is focused on four capitals - Washington, Moscow, Ankara and Jerusalem. Domestically, Damascus is taking its revenge on ousted dictator Bashar el-Assad, sentencing him to death in absentia and leaving him to Putin’s mercy, but at the same time cannot be relied upon to refrain from similar atrocities regarding minorities, especially Druze, Christians and Alawites.

Indeed, it is not clear yet whether al-Shara has shed his Jihadi identity even while he has adopted the manners of a would-be National leader. So where is Syria headed, as it closes in on the two-year mark for the fall of Assad?
