The old principle that a crisis is also an opportunity was validated last month when Israel learned that its citizens were actively being targeted by Iranian hit squads in the city of Istanbul. Close cooperation between Mossad and the Turkish Intelligence service MIT managed to foil several plots and bring about the arrest of perpetrators, either Iranian or local contract killers. Israeli leaders highlighted the role of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in overseeing the joint operation, as a backdrop to a declared wish to upgrade diplomatic relations to an Ambassadorial level.
