Turkey, a country with almost 80 million people, has become in recent years a significant player on the international arena, after years of diminished influence.
The country, which joined NATO in the early 1950' became a barrier in the war against Islamic Extremism, playing key roles in ongoing efforts to tackle the dangerous phenomenon. Several spats, however, highlighted rising tensions between Turkey, the United States and the European Union, in the wake of a failed coup attempt on the 15th of July, followed by a prolonged crackdown by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against his opposition that angered both Europe and the United States.
