Since the early spring of 2011, and as part of what is known today as the Arab Spring - a popular uprising in Syria turned into a bloody civil war that claimed the lives of almost 200 thousand people up-to-date.
In the midst of the ongoing chaos, Islamist groups took advantage of the conflict in a bid to fulfill their religious calling - in advancing an Islamic Caliphate, an Arab term for an Islamic state led by a supreme religious and political leader who is believed to be the successor of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
